HISTORY OF ALERIA

Aleria is the capital of ancient Corsica. Its history goes back 8000 years !
The first signs of human settlement in the region of Aleria date back to 6’000 BC. From the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age shepherds and farmers settle here, exploiting the natural resources of the region, namely those of its lagoons.

In 565 BC , Phoenicians, expulsed by the Persians, colonize Aleria. This colony will favour local trading with different Mediterranean civilisations. Then the Etruscans and Carthage take an interest in the town of Aleria. That’s why the Romans, who have realised the strategic position of this town, started settling there as of 259 BC.

The town slowly begins to look like a Roman town : a Roman forum, court, shops, Roman thermal baths. Aleria becomes the capital of ancient Corsica and remains the centre of this Romanisation for seven centuriesToday you can still find many traces from this Roman period.

However, in the 5th century, after the fall of Rome, the town is destroyed by the Vandals, who also bring malaria to the island €¦  With malaria rampant in the coastal regions, there will be no human presence in the area for several centuries.

During the Middle Ages, Aleria remains under Genovese rule, despite the fierce attacks of the Corsicans, who want to liberate the island.

The history of modern Aleria is still unclear. In 1824 the municipality of Aleria is created with land taken from Tallone, Zuani, Vivario and Muracciole and will undergo numerous changes in modern times.
